Offering of the Peacock – Give thanks to individuality and authenticity.
I love peacocks. Growing up we lived on a smallholding in the village of Banks in northern Cumbria on the borders with Northumbria and Scotland. My Granda was retired from farming the land but still had a lot of poultry and some Jersey cows. He also kept peacocks, for no reason other than that he thought they were a ‘grand’ bird, even though they were totally out of place in northern Cumbria. When we were little it was a normal sight to have peacocks perched on our climbing frame and to find their feathers in the garden.
In creating this piece, I wanted a classical thrown form to help represent the opulence and stature of the peacock. The peacock sits atop the handle, its tail trailing down the pot, no need to show it off, its beauty and power is obvious as it proudly stares ahead. The hare fairy joins the peacock, quietly holding up an offering as he too looks forward into the future.
Wheel thrown and hand sculpted with liquid gold detail. Approx total height 20cm. To find out more about the making process click here.
