Otter – Guardian of Joy & Flow

Hand-Sculpted Pottery for Playfulness, Connection & Water Magic

This charming ceramic otter, sculpted mid-roll with paws in the air and tail curled like a wave, captures the essence of joy in motion. With glossy eyes and a cheeky expression, this piece is full of life — a tribute to the spirit of play, curiosity, and the freedom to float with what is.

In Celtic and coastal folklore, the otter is a sacred animal of the water realm — a creature of protection, family bonds, and hidden treasure. Otters were said to guide fishermen, bless travellers, and remind us to embrace delight even during uncertain tides.

Perfect for a windowsill, altar, or bathroom shrine, this one-of-a-kind piece carries the medicine of laughter, adaptability, and trusting the flow.

The Otter’s Tale...

In ancient Celtic tradition, otters were known as water dogs of the fae, beloved by river goddesses and shapeshifters alike. To see one was a sign of good luck, especially in times of change. They remind us to stay light of heart, hold loved ones close, and glide — not resist — the currents of becoming.

Way of the Waterdog – Embrace Play

This piece came to me one night in my dreams. When I woke up I felt like I had made and remade it one hundred times. What ever plans I had in the studio that day were changed as I had to create the otter to see if it would work like it did in my dreams. The body is created from a wheel thrown bowl that is altered, the head a thrown ball and the tail a thrown cone. Once the thrown pieces were thrown they were altered and joined. It came together just as it did in my dream, reminding me that sometimes we just have to change our plans and play.
