Join Carys and Tommy Martin in their Cleveland studio for a full-day, hands-on exploration of glaze chemistry and testing. This intimate workshop is perfect for potters who are new to making their own glazes.
Whether you’re chasing specific colour effects, trying to recreate a legacy glaze, or simply curious about how glazes really work — this course will equip you with the theory, tools, and confidence to start experimenting.
What You’ll Learn:

Glaze theory – What is a glaze? Learn about glass formers, stabilizers, fluxes, and colourants.

Safe studio practice – How to handle glaze materials, dispose responsibly, and work safely.

Testing techniques – How to make and label test tiles, use line and grid blends, and mix a base glaze.

Colourants – Explore how oxides and stains influence results.

Application methods – Learn and try different techniques including dipping, brushing, layering and more.

Record keeping – Learn how to document your process and results for future success.

Results review – Join an evening session to discuss your test outcomes, glaze flaws, food safety, and next steps.
You'll leave with your own test tiles, a foundational understanding of glaze chemistry, and the confidence to start developing your own glaze recipes.
