The Story of Common Sage
Common Sage
Botanical Herb
Salvia officinalis
Sage has been honoured for centuries as a botanical of wisdom, renewal and protection. Its name is linked to the Latin salvare, meaning “to heal” or “to save,” reflecting its long association with restoration and wellbeing.
Throughout European tradition, sage has been used to cleanse spaces, mark new beginnings and invite clarity. Its earthy, aromatic fragrance encourages us to clear away what is no longer needed and make space for what comes next.
A familiar plant in medieval herb gardens, sage became associated with longevity, good judgement and wisdom gained through experience. An old proverb asks, “Why should a man die whilst sage grows in his garden?”
Within the Apothecary
Sage is one of the guiding botanicals of the Close to Earth Apothecary. Chosen for its qualities of wisdom, purification, and renewal, it appears throughout our creations wherever fresh beginnings, intentional living, and the gentle clearing of old energy are being honoured.
"Clear the old. Welcome the new. Walk forward with wisdom."
