The Story of Mugwort

Mugwort

Botanical Herb

Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris)

Mugwort has been honoured for centuries as a botanical of intuition, protection, dreaming, and the unseen. Growing untamed along hedgerows, pathways, and forgotten places, it has long been regarded as a guardian of thresholds - a plant that accompanies those who walk between the familiar and the unknown.

Throughout folklore, mugwort was gathered to protect travellers, bless the home, and accompany seasonal ceremonies. Burned as incense or carried as a charm, it was believed to cleanse unwanted influences, strengthen intuition, and create a bridge between the earthly and ancestral realms. Often associated with the moon and the quiet wisdom of the night, mugwort has traditionally been used to encourage vivid dreams, deepen meditation, and support moments of reflection and inner knowing.

Beyond its symbolism, mugwort has a long history in traditional herbal practice. It was valued as a warming herb, often used to support digestion and women's wellbeing, while its aromatic leaves were placed among clothing or hung within the home to deter insects and refresh living spaces.

Across Europe, mugwort became known as a traveller's herb. Sprigs were tucked into shoes or woven into belts to ease long journeys and offer protection along the road. During Midsummer celebrations, garlands of mugwort were worn or cast into ceremonial fires, symbolising the release of the old and the welcoming of the season ahead.
