The Story of Elderflower
Elderflower
Botanical Herb
Sambucus nigra
Elderflower has been treasured for centuries as a botanical of protection, healing, renewal and transformation. Its delicate white blossoms appear in early summer, marking a season of abundance and carrying the promise of what is yet to come.
In traditional herbal practice, elderflowers have long been gathered for teas, cordials and remedies, while their soft floral fragrance has become closely associated with summer.
Throughout British and European folklore, the Elder was considered a sacred hedgerow tree, protected by the Elder Mother. It was customary to ask permission before gathering from the tree, taking only what was needed and offering thanks in return - a reminder of an older relationship with plants rooted in respect, gratitude and reciprocity.
Within the Apothecary
Elderflower is one of the guiding botanicals of the Close to Earth Apothecary. Chosen for its qualities of wisdom, healing, and reverence for the natural world, it appears throughout our seasonal creations wherever gratitude, gentle transformation, and the quiet abundance of nature are being honoured.
"Gather with gratitude. Take only what you need. Honour the gifts of the earth."
