Hag stones are naturally formed stones with a hole worn clean through them by water and time. Found along shorelines and riverbeds, they have long been considered protective talismans in British and Celtic folklore.

Traditionally, a hag stone was hung by a doorway, tied to a bedpost, or carried in a pocket. It was believed to ward off ill fortune, protect against unwanted spirits, and allow the holder to “see beyond” the ordinary world when looking through the hole.

They are stones shaped not by force - but by persistence. By the slow patience of water.

These wheel-thrown vessels are inspired by that same portal form.

Each pot is thrown on the wheel and altered while soft to create a central opening - a symbolic threshold. A place to look through. A space to consider what sits beyond.

The smooth, stone-like glaze references weathered rock and shoreline finds. The form is simple, grounded, tactile - echoing the quiet strength of natural hag stones.

This piece functions as:

Wheel-thrown and individually finished in my studio. Each portal opening forms organically - no two are ever identical.
