Hand-Building, Wheel Throwing & Sculpting with Carys Martin
Wednesday Evening| 6:30–8:30pm
10-Week Term - July 8th – Sept 9th
📍 The Studio, Cleveland
Build confidence across hand-building, wheel throwing, and sculptural techniques in this supportive and unhurried 10-week course guided by ceramic artist Carys Martin.
Held at The Studio in Cleveland, this course welcomes both beginners and continuing students. Carys’ work is known for its strong sense of form, surface detail, and storytelling, often inspired by folklore, nature, and symbolic imagery. She brings a deep understanding of clay as both a functional and sculptural medium, with an emphasis on sound construction, thoughtful making, and developing your own visual language.
What You’ll Learn
This is an unstructured, project-led course where you’re supported to learn the techniques needed to bring your own ideas to life.
Rather than following a set program, you’ll be guided to develop the skills that suit the pieces you want to create.
You’ll have access to learning a wide range of techniques, including:
• Hand-building - slab building, coiling & pinch forms
• Wheel throwing foundations and form refinement
• Sculptural construction and structural integrity
• Surface decoration using underglazes, slips, textures & tissue transfers
• Glazing approaches that enhance form, texture and finish
Instruction is tailored to your experience level, whether you’re learning foundations or refining your personal style.
Students are encouraged to develop their own projects - functional, sculptural, or narrative - with personalised guidance throughout the term.
Term Fee - $650 (10 Weeks)
Includes:
• Professional instruction with Carys
• Use of pottery wheels, studio tools and equipment
• Access to studio glazes and shared surface decoration materials
• Storage of work during the term
• Kiln firing coordination and handling
Materials & Firing (Charged Separately)
To keep class fees fair and accessible, materials and firing are charged separately so you only pay for what you use.
This allows lighter users to keep costs lower while giving more ambitious makers freedom to create larger or more complex work.
Clay (10kg bags)
• BRT & Paper Clay - $40
• SES Clay - $30
Firing - $13 per kg, per firing
• Bisque firing - $13/kg
• Glaze firing - $13/kg
Each piece is fired twice.
A steady, skills-focused class for anyone wanting time, guidance, and space to grow their practice across form, surface, and technique.

Testimonials:
"A few years ago as an absolute beginner I signed up for my first term of weekly
classes with Carys and I have been returning each term ever since! Carys’ studio is
filled with light, joy and inspirational artwork and people. The sessions are learner-
centred with a unique combination of structure and the freedom to pursue whatever
skills or outcome you desire. Carys has a gift for knowing when to encourage a
student to stretch and grow, coaching to them to achieve art that never conceived
they could create. Equally, Carys creates an environment and provides feedback
that helps you consolidate skills and learn the craft more deeply. Additionally, it is a
pleasure to learn surrounded by others who are at difference stages of learning from
beginner through to those who are working on pieces for exhibitions."

I commenced learning with Carys six months ago and I am constantly surprised by my progress. Carys caters to all levels in her classes and workshops in a fun, warm and supportive environment. I equally treasure being part of this lovely community with the skills and techniques I am learning from Carys in class." Angela
