Hand-Building, Wheel Throwing & Sculpting with Carys Martin
Tuesday evenings | 6:30 – 8:30pm
10-week term
📍 The Studio, Cleveland
If you’re looking to build confidence across hand-building, wheel throwing, and sculptural techniques, this 10-week course offers a supportive, unhurried space to learn, explore, and refine your ceramic practice.
Held at The Studio in Cleveland, this course is suitable for both beginners and continuing students. You’ll be guided by ceramic artist Carys Martin, whose work is known for its strong sense of form, surface detail, and storytelling, often drawing on folklore, nature, and symbolic imagery. Carys brings a deep understanding of clay as both a functional and sculptural medium, with an emphasis on sound construction, thoughtful making, and developing a personal visual language.
Across the term, Carys will guide students through a combination of hand-building techniques (slab building, coiling, pinch pots) and wheel throwing, supporting you to develop core skills while allowing space to focus on your preferred methods. Instruction will be tailored to individual experience levels, whether you are learning the basics or refining existing skills.
Surface decoration is an important part of the course, with guidance in using underglazes, slips, textures, tissue transfers, and stoneware glazes. Carys will demonstrate a range of decorating and glazing techniques to enhance form, surface, and finish, helping you make considered choices that support your work.
Students are encouraged to work on their own projects - functional, sculptural, or narrative - with individual guidance provided throughout the term to support confidence, skill development, and creative direction.
This course is suitable for:
-
Beginners wanting a solid foundation in hand-building and wheel throwing
-
Continuing students looking to refine technique and develop personal style
What’s included:
-
10kg of clay per student
-
Glazing and firing (bisque and glaze) for work made from the included 10kg of clay
-
Use of studio tools and basic materials
Once the included 10kg of clay has been used, any additional clay, glazing, and firings are available at an additional cost.
A steady, skills-focused class for anyone wanting time, guidance, and space to grow their practice across form, surface, and technique.

Testimonials:
"A few years ago as an absolute beginner I signed up for my first term of weekly
classes with Carys and I have been returning each term ever since! Carys’ studio is
filled with light, joy and inspirational artwork and people. The sessions are learner-
centred with a unique combination of structure and the freedom to pursue whatever
skills or outcome you desire. Carys has a gift for knowing when to encourage a
student to stretch and grow, coaching to them to achieve art that never conceived
they could create. Equally, Carys creates an environment and provides feedback
that helps you consolidate skills and learn the craft more deeply. Additionally, it is a
pleasure to learn surrounded by others who are at difference stages of learning from
beginner through to those who are working on pieces for exhibitions."

I commenced learning with Carys six months ago and I am constantly surprised by my progress. Carys caters to all levels in her classes and workshops in a fun, warm and supportive environment. I equally treasure being part of this lovely community with the skills and techniques I am learning from Carys in class." Angela
