About Sue -
Sue Goodwin is a ceramic artist, teacher, and lifelong maker whose connection to clay spans more than 40 years. Originally from South Africa and now based in Brisbane, Sue brings a wealth of experience across wheel throwing, handbuilding, sculptural ceramics, surface decoration, and glazing techniques.
Mentored for over 27 years by South African Master Potter Digby Hoets, Sue developed a deeply grounded approach to ceramics that balances technical skill with creative exploration. In 2013 she opened her own studio in South Africa, where she taught both children and adults, guiding students through wheel throwing, handbuilding, sculptural work, and glaze experimentation.
Alongside her ceramics practice, Sue also worked professionally in graphic design and painting, bringing a strong understanding of composition, texture, colour, and surface detail into her ceramic work and teaching style.
Since relocating to Australia in 2024, Sue has continued teaching ceramics within the Brisbane community while exploring Australian clay bodies, firing methods, slips, and glazes. Her workshops encourage confidence, curiosity, and connection to the creative process, offering students a welcoming and supportive environment to explore clay at their own pace.
Whether working on the wheel or by hand, Sue believes clay holds a unique ability to ground, connect, and tell stories through touch, form, and making.
Testimonials:
"A few years ago as an absolute beginner I signed up for my first term of weekly
classes with Carys and I have been returning each term ever since! Carys’ studio is filled with light, joy and inspirational artwork and people. The sessions are learner-centred with a unique combination of structure and the freedom to pursue whatever skills or outcome you desire. Carys has a gift for knowing when to encourage a student to stretch and grow, coaching to them to achieve art that never conceived they could create. Equally, Carys creates an environment and provides feedback that helps you consolidate skills and learn the craft more deeply. Additionally, it is a pleasure to learn surrounded by others who are at difference stages of learning from beginner through to those who are working on pieces for exhibitions."
